Which Stainless Steel to Choose for a Boat
In a marine environment, the difference between grades is enormous. As a general rule, 316 resists chloride corrosion much better than 304, which is cheaper but eventually develops rust stains near the sea. For submerged or heavily stressed parts, such as shafts, structural fasteners, or anchoring components, duplex or superduplex grades are used, while titanium is reserved for parts where both weight and strength are critical.
Tips for Ordering Metal Fabrication
- Provide measurements and photos of the area, or ask for measurements to be taken on board.
- Specify the finish from the start: mirror polish and satin finish do not hold up the same way.
- Ask about sealing deck fasteners to prevent leaks.
- Group parts into a single order if you’re doing a refit: this saves on design and assembly costs.
From Design to Installation
A typical order begins with taking measurements on board or using the shipyard’s blueprints. From there, the part is designed, laser-cut with the precision needed to ensure a perfect fit the first time, welded and machined in the workshop, finished as specified, and finally installed on the boat with its fasteners sealed. Having the entire process under one roof reduces lead times and minimizes errors—which is crucial when the yacht has a set departure date.
