The usual setup is a yearly plan: engine and filter service, new anodes, antifouling and hull polishing during the winter haul-out, and regular visits in season to check batteries, bilges, mooring lines and cleaning. Workshops in Mahón and Ciutadella also offer guardiennage, looking after the boat while you are away and having it ready when you arrive.
If you only spend part of the year on the island, ask for a contract that spells out what they check, how often and how they report: photos after each visit, a call if they find something and a quote before any repair.
The tramontana, the north wind, blows hard in winter and hits the ports and anchorages of the north coast, such as Fornells and Addaia, the most. Good maintenance checks lines, fenders and covers before every storm. In Ciutadella, summer rissagas can move a lot of water in the harbour within minutes.
Sun and salt quickly wear wood, canvas and deck plastics. Varnish or teak treatment every season and covers in good condition make a boat last much longer, especially llaüts and classic boats, which are very common on the island.
Preventive maintenance is what keeps breakdowns out of your summer. A full annual plan usually covers the engine service (oil, filters, impeller, anodes and belts), a haul-out with hull cleaning and antifouling, a check of the electrics and batteries, greasing winches and seacocks, and inspecting the safety gear.
Many maintenance companies in Menorca offer annual contracts with regular visits: they run the engine, air the boat, check mooring lines and bilge pumps, and tell you if anything needs attention. If you don't sail every week, it is the cheapest way to have the boat ready when you arrive.
Always ask for a written quote that separates labour and parts, and check whether the yard is an authorised dealer for your engine brand: some warranties require servicing by an official agent.
Look at reviews from other owners, whether they work in your marina (or charge travel time) and whether they hand over a job report with what was done and what to watch. On Nautify you can contact several companies at once and compare replies.
It depends on the length, the engine and what the plan includes (haul-out, antifouling, guardiennage, cleaning). Ask two or three companies for a written quote with the same tasks so you can compare them.
Yes. Several workshops in Mahón, Ciutadella and Addaia offer winter storage ashore or afloat, with regular checks. Book before autumn, as boatyard space is limited.
It mainly depends on length and engine type. As a guide, yearly maintenance for a 5 to 16 metre boat ranges from about €700 for a small motorboat to more than €20,000 for a large yacht, excluding berth and insurance. The most reliable figure comes from quotes by two or three yards with your boat's details.
Usually a full service once a year, typically before the season, and an engine service every 100 to 200 hours or yearly, whichever comes first. Hauling out to clean the hull and renew antifouling is done every 12 to 24 months depending on the water and use.
A monthly or yearly service in which the company checks the boat regularly, airs it, runs the engine, inspects lines and batteries and reports any issue. It is very useful if you live far from the marina or sail rarely.
Yes: rinsing with fresh water, checking fluid levels and changing the impeller or oil on simple engines are within reach of many owners. For electrics, complex mechanics or anything below the waterline, use a professional.
