The annual service includes changing the oil and filters (oil, fuel and water separator), the raw-water pump impeller, anodes, belts and checking the heat exchanger and exhaust elbow. On outboards it adds gearcase oil and greasing.
A good mechanic also checks the cooling system, the fuel supply and the engine electrics, and warns you about wear before it becomes a mid-season breakdown.
Official dealers (Yamaha, Volvo Penta, Mercury, Suzuki, Yanmar…) have the brand's diagnostic tools and keep the warranty valid. Independent mechanics are often more flexible on price and timing and know several brands well.
In Asturias you can compare both. Always give the engine make, model and hours when asking for a quote, and check whether the price includes parts.
As a guide, between €130 and €1,300 per annual service and engine, depending on horsepower, outboard or inboard and brand. Large inboard diesels and official dealers sit at the top of the range.
Most manufacturers ask for a service every 100 to 200 hours or once a year, whichever comes first. The impeller is usually replaced every one or two years even if it looks fine.
The usual causes are a broken impeller, a water intake blocked by weed or plastic, a dirty raw-water strainer or a scaled heat exchanger. If the alarm sounds, stop the engine and check that water is coming out of the exhaust.
Change the oil and filters, flush the cooling circuit with fresh water, add antifreeze if there is any risk of frost, stabilise or fill the fuel tank and disconnect the batteries. Many yards in Asturias offer it as a winterization package.
