Safety on Board: What Needs to Be Inspected

Life rafts, emergency position-indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs), and fire extinguishers are subject to mandatory periodic inspections. Carrying expired equipment can result in a fine and, more importantly, pose a risk.

Equipment	What Is Inspected
Life raft	Inspection and repacking at an authorized station
Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB)	Battery, hydrostatic release mechanism, and log
Fire extinguishers	Charge, pressure, and inspection date
Self-inflating life jackets	Cartridge and condition of the bladder

Advantages of a one-stop shop

Instead of coordinating a mechanic, an electrician, a painter, and a liferaft station separately, Sernaval brings together nearly all of these services under one roof. For the shipowner, this means a single point of contact, a single quote, and fewer days with the boat out of service.

Visits to the Workshop

The workshop operates by appointment only, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. It’s best to call ahead to schedule the work and set a date.

Tips Before the Season

• Check the expiration dates on your life raft, emergency beacon, and fire extinguishers before your ITB inspection or a trip.
• Have your engine serviced before summer, not in the middle of July.
• Test the air conditioning while the boat is in port, before you need it.
• Ask for a single quote if there are multiple jobs: it’s usually more cost-effective than getting separate quotes.

Nautical Store

In addition to the workshop, Sernaval has a physical store for spare parts and accessories, which is useful for finding parts without waiting for shipments and ensures the workshop has everything it needs on hand for each repair.
