Sailboat specialists since 2003: rigging, deck hardware, repairs, life rafts, and management in Maó
About us
Sailpower Menorca is Menorca’s sailing boat specialist: rigging, deck fittings, repairs, and sailing boat management from its workshop in Maó. It was founded by Laurence Vinnie in 2003 to serve sailboat owners based on the island and provide maintenance and repair services to visiting boats and charter companies. Today, the company operates out of a facility in the Maó industrial park, featuring a maintenance workshop, boat storage, and a dedicated rigging area, and its team is active daily in the port of Maó and at Port d’Addaia.
Services
- Complete rigging: installation, inspection, replacement, and adjustment.
- Deck fittings: supply and installation of winches, pulleys, blocks, furlers, and hardware.
- Sailboat maintenance and repairs.
- Sailboat management: year-round care of the boat for owners who do not live on the island.
- Life-saving equipment: life rafts and safety gear; their website shows the workshop with life rafts open for inspection.
- Carpentry—interior and exterior.
- Marine engineering, 12-volt electrical systems, and plumbing on board.
- Fiberglass and gelcoat repairs.
- Organization of dry docking, antifouling, and work on the boat out of the water.
- Boat sales: dealer for Highfield inflatable boats and used boats.
Why Choose a Sailing Specialist
A sailboat has specific needs that a general repair shop doesn’t always fully understand: the correct tension of the rigging, the condition of terminals and spreaders, the operation of furlers and winches, or the watertightness of deck passages for each fitting. A workshop dedicated to sailboats is familiar with these weak points and knows how to inspect them all at once when the boat is on land or stripped of its rigging.
Sailboat Management in Menorca
Many boat owners with vessels in Maó or Addaia live off the island. A management service typically includes:
| Task | Usual Frequency |
|---|---|
| Inspection of mooring lines, fenders, and bilge pumps | Periodically, and after storms |
| Ventilation and humidity control | Periodically |
| Battery charging and monitoring | Periodically |
| Preparing the boat before your arrival | Before each visit |
| Coordinating dry-docking and repairs | As needed |
| Winterization and de-winterization | At the end and beginning of the season |
Inspecting the rigging before the season
As a general guideline, it’s a good idea to perform a visual inspection every season and a professional inspection every few years, and to replace the standing rigging every 10 to 15 years, depending on usage and your insurer’s requirements. Warning signs: broken strands, rust or cracks in the thimbles, bent thimbles, and creaking in the mast while sailing.
Life Rafts
Life rafts and self-inflating life jackets require periodic inspections according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Having them inspected in the winter, while the boat is out of commission, ensures you won’t be without a life raft on board when the season begins.
