Standing rigging is the shrouds, forestay and backstay that hold the mast up, usually stainless wire or rod. Running rigging is the ropes used to handle the sails: halyards, sheets, vangs and reefing lines. Both suffer from sun, salt and constant load, and a failure in the standing rigging can cost you the mast.
A rigger checks terminals, spreaders, chainplates and turnbuckles, replaces wire and rope, fits headsail and mainsail furlers, and goes up the mast to check lights, antennas and sheaves.
Many insurers ask for standing rigging to be replaced every 10 to 15 years, sooner if you sail a lot. Warning signs are cracked terminals, broken strands, rust weeping from swages and play in spreaders or chainplates.
In Barcelona, get a rig inspection before every season and always before a long passage. Ask for a written report with photos: besides peace of mind, it helps with your insurer.
As a guide, every 10 to 15 years, depending on use and your insurer. An annual inspection will tell you if it is needed sooner.
It depends on length, number of shrouds and whether it is wire or rod. Ask for a quote including terminals, turnbuckles and unstepping and stepping the mast if needed.
Not always: some jobs can be done with the mast stepped. For a full re-rig or a thorough mast check, unstepping is usually better.
Halyards, sheets and vangs, especially where they run through blocks and clutches. If the cover is worn or the core shows, replace them.
