Coves to Discover
The coast between Cala d’Or and Santanyí features some of Mallorca’s most beautiful coves:
- Cala Mondragó: a natural park with crystal-clear waters.
- Cala Sa Nau: crystal-clear water, ideal for swimming.
- Cala Esmeralda: a small cove next to Cala d’Or.
- Cala Serena: secluded and very photogenic.
- Porto Petro: a traditional port, a great stop along the coast.
- Es Pontàs: the famous natural arch of Santanyí.
Planning Tools
Its website features a map of coves with approximate distances, marine weather information for the area (wind, waves, visibility, and water temperature), and a coastal navigation chart. These are for general guidance only and are not a substitute for official charts or AEMET advisories.
Tips Before You Set Out
- Check the wind: When the Levante wind is blowing, the coves along this coast can get choppy. The skipper or crew will recommend the best route.
- Anchor on sand, never on Posidonia seagrass: it’s protected.
- Bring water, sunscreen, and something warm for the return trip if you set out in the afternoon.
Which Boat to Choose
- Couple or small family without a boating license: a license-free boat to explore Cala d’Or, Cala Esmeralda, and Cala Gran at your own pace.
- Group with a license: a licensed motorboat to go further, all the way to Cala Mondragó or Es Pontàs.
- Celebration or group looking to relax: a private day charter with a skipper, drinks, snacks, paddleboarding, and snorkeling.
- Special end to the day: the two-hour Sunset experience at dusk.
Mondragó Natural Park
Very close to Cala d’Or is the Mondragó Natural Park, with white-sand coves, pine forests, and crystal-clear waters. From the sea, you can see a coastline that’s much less accessible by land. Remember to stay within the marked swimming areas and anchor on sandy bottoms.
