Mast service, standing and running rigging, hydraulics, and new or repaired sails in Son Castelló
H2O Palma is a rigging, hydraulics, and sails workshop based in the Son Castelló industrial park in Palma de Mallorca, run by Massimo Cioffi and a team with more than 20 years of experience in the nautical sector. The workshop works on sailboats of all sizes, from cruising boats to superyachts, and combines three specialties that go hand in hand on a sailboat: the rigging, the hydraulic systems that power it, and the sails.
Photos on their website show their team working up the mast, inspecting winches and deck hardware, and in the port of Palma, next to the STP shipyard.
In September 2019, H2O Palma performed a refit of the main halyard block and radar protection on the 110-foot sailboat Imagine B.
On large sailboats, the hydraulic system operates the backstay, the jib furler, the boom, the winches, and sometimes the keel. As a general guideline:
| Component | Inspection |
|---|---|
| Oil level and condition | Every season |
| Hoses and fittings | Every season, checking for leaks and cracks |
| Cylinder seals | Depending on use; replace if there are leaks |
| Accumulators | Check nitrogen charge |
| Pumps and valves | Periodic professional inspection |
A torn seam or a snag on the leech can be fixed quickly if detected early. Inspecting the sails at the end of the season, washing them, and storing them dry greatly extends their life, and UV covers protect the furled genoa from the sun.
Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
On a sailboat, the rigging, hydraulics, and sails are all interconnected: a poorly adjusted hydraulic backstay distorts the sail, and a worn-out furler puts undue strain on the rigging. Having all three specialties under one roof allows us to inspect the entire rigging, identify the true source of a problem, and resolve it without having to coordinate with multiple companies.
| Service | Purpose |
|---|---|
| High-altitude inspection | Inspect terminals, spreaders, lights, and antennas |
| Pulley inspection | Prevent wear on halyards |
| Cable or rod replacement | Renew the standing rigging |
| Furling system maintenance | Ensure the genoa furls effortlessly |
| Mast painting | Protect the aluminum from corrosion |
A spring inspection of the rigging, hydraulics, and sails prevents surprises on the first outing: this is when oil leaks, worn halyards, or torn seams are discovered after the winter.
