The most common jobs are fitting or replacing multifunction chartplotters, radars, sounders and transducers, AIS receivers and transponders, autopilots and DSC VHF radios.
Integrating everything on an NMEA 2000 network lets you see engine, wind and navigation data on a single screen. An experienced installer knows where to place antennas and transducers so they perform well.
Ask whether they are an official dealer for the brand (Garmin, Raymarine, Simrad, B&G, Furuno…), whether the warranty covers the installation and whether existing cabling and mounts can be reused.
A new transducer may require a haul-out; combine it with your antifouling if one is planned.
The unit ranges from a few hundred to several thousand euros depending on size and features. Installation usually adds a few hours to a couple of days, depending on cable runs and whether the transducer changes.
In most countries it isn't for leisure boats, but it is highly recommended to see and be seen in busy waters. Check the rules where you sail.
Many faults come down to connections, power supply or software and can be fixed without replacing the unit. An electronics technician can diagnose it before you buy new.
It is the network standard that links the boat's electronics so they share data: position, depth, wind, engine. It makes adding or replacing equipment easier later on.
