What a marine upholsterer does
Boat upholstery lives in conditions a house never sees: sun, salt, damp, fresh and salt water. That is why marine upholsterers use open-cell quick-dry foam (such as Dry Fast), UV-protected marine vinyls and fabrics, PTFE thread that does not rot, and stainless or technical plastic zips and fasteners.
Besides cushions, many marine upholsterers make awnings, biminis, sprayhoods, console and full boat covers, curtains and headliners. They usually come aboard to measure or template and deliver the work installed.
Choosing upholstery for your boat
Ask for fabric samples and check resistance to sun and mildew and the colourfastness warranty. Cheap vinyl can crack within two summers, while good marine vinyl lasts many years with simple care.
In Barcelona, order work in autumn or winter: in spring workshops fill up and lead times grow just when you want the boat ready to sail.
Marine upholstery in Barcelona: frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to re-upholster boat cushions?
It depends on the number of pieces, the foam and the fabric. Ask for a per-piece quote and whether it includes new foam or only covers.
What foam is best for outdoor cushions?
Open-cell quick-dry foam such as Dry Fast, which lets water through and dries quickly. Standard foam holds moisture and ends up mouldy.
How long does a marine upholsterer take?
A few weeks out of season. In spring lead times can double, so book early.
Do they also make awnings and biminis?
Many do: made-to-measure awnings, biminis, sprayhoods and covers, often including the stainless frame.
