About us

Loft Customs is a workshop specializing in technical tarps, covers, and custom equipment for yachts, based in Palma. It was founded in 2014 by Brendan Simons, who has over 20 years of experience in high-end workshops such as the Alinghi America’s Cup team and racing programs like Ran, Belle, and Cannonball. The company works with both racing yachts and superyachts.

How They Work

Loft Customs takes a technical, regatta-inspired approach to its tarps:

  • Custom pattern-making using fixed templates.
  • 3D scanning and template measurement taken directly on the boat.
  • CAD design and reinforced seams.
  • Analysis of loads and friction zones to ensure the cover doesn’t fail where it’s under the most stress.
  • “Yacht-clean” finish, leaving no marks on the deck or teak.

Projects

Their website features projects for boats such as Bella Mente (racing maxi), Raven (record-breaking sailboat with assisted foils), Denali (Mills 58), and the exterior refit of the superyacht Hetairos. The photos show technical covers on teak decks, watertight bags at the bow, and protective covers installed on large sailboats moored in Palma.

Why Choose a Custom Technical Cover Over a Generic One

When It’s Worth It

  • Winter storage in a windy harbor: A tightly stretched cover protects the teak and equipment from the sun and rain.
  • Regattas: Lightweight covers that can be set up and taken down quickly.
  • Superyachts: covers that complement the boat’s exterior design and image.
  • Maintenance: mats and protective covers so technicians don’t leave marks on the deck.

Tips for Ordering a Cover

  • Let them take measurements directly on the boat: measurements from blueprints don’t always match reality.
  • Think about how you’ll install it: on your own or with help, and how long you want the process to take.
  • Request reinforcements in high-friction areas: stanchions, winches, cleats.
  • Store it in a dry place: this way, it will last many more seasons.

From the World of Racing to Cruising

Experience with racing boats translates well to any yacht: in a race, a cover or protective cover must be lightweight, quick to install, and able to withstand loads without breaking. Those same criteria ensure that a winter cover or a cockpit stowage system works better and lasts longer on a cruising yacht or a superyacht.
