Why custom lines

An off-the-shelf line rarely has the ideal length, diameter, and construction for every maneuver. A rope-making shop customizes:

• The material (polyester, Dyneema, blends) based on the load and allowable stretch.
• The sheath, for grip on cleats and winches.
• Splices and endings, which are stronger and lighter than knots.
• Colors, to identify each maneuver at a glance.

Maintenance Tips

• Rinse the lines with fresh water at the end of the season and dry them in the shade.
• Rotate the end sections of halyards if possible, to distribute wear evenly.
• Protect sheets and halyards from the sun when the boat is moored.
• Check the pulleys: a seized pulley will destroy a line in no time.
• Store spare ropes in a dry place away from light.

A good mooring line, with the right amount of elasticity and protection in high-friction areas, protects the boat and cleats on days with heavy swells. For anchoring, the right combination of chain and line improves holding power and makes maneuvering easier.
