New sails, repairs, rigging, and composite work in a 2,000 m² solar-powered warehouse in Can Valero
ONE Sails Palma is the sail-making shop of the international OneSails network in Mallorca, located in the Can Valero industrial park in Palma. It operates out of a 2,000 m² solar-powered facility, which allows it to take on large projects while maintaining quality, and combines—as it puts it—first-rate customer service with craftsmanship and a high degree of technical innovation. It serves regatta sailors and cruising yacht owners, from small boats to superyachts.
| Person | Role |
|---|---|
| Peter Bresnan | Director, naval architect with over 20 years of experience in the design, construction, and repair of sailboats |
| Alicia MacLean | Co-Director, responsible for management, with extensive experience in the sailing industry |
| Pau Vey | Sailmaker, former competitive rower and sailing instructor, with over 10 years of sailmaking experience |
| Jaime Barceló | Sailmaker |
The photos on their website show the team in front of the workshop in Palma—the large wooden floor where sails are laid out and cut—and sailboats sailing under their sails.
A sail designed to win races is not the same as one meant for cruising across the Mediterranean with the family. In racing, performance and weight are key; in cruising, durability, ease of handling, and resistance to sun exposure are paramount. A sailmaker with experience in both worlds knows how to choose the right fabric, cut, and reinforcements for each use.
| Care | Why |
|---|---|
| Rinse with fresh water | Crystallized salt wears down the fibers |
| Dry before storing | Prevents mold and stains |
| Use covers or UV protection | The sun is the fabric’s biggest enemy |
| Check seams and battens every season | A small repair caught early prevents a major one |
| Store rolled up or folded without sharp creases | Maintains the sail’s shape |
In addition to sails, the workshop manufactures custom parts using 3D printing and works with composites—a very useful service when a fitting is discontinued or a special part is needed for a specific boat.
Every season, the Bay of Palma hosts some of the Mediterranean’s most important regattas and a large fleet of cruising yachts and superyachts. Having the sailmaker right in the city allows for sail inspections between regattas, urgent repairs, and boat measurements right at the mooring.
As part of OneSails, the Palma sailmaker shares designs, materials, and expertise with the rest of the network, while also providing local service to boats in Mallorca. For a boat owner sailing the Mediterranean, this means being able to receive service at other ports in the network if needed.
